The DoubleDawg is based on the tweed narrow panel 1957 5E8A low power Twin circuit, another of the legendary amplifiers that came out of Fullerton in the 1950s. The amp was designed to offer as much headroom as possible and could easily provide enough clean volume for any venue at the time. It also excels in the overdrive department, and has a very distinctive throaty growl when you start to push it.
Features of the DoubleDawg are Normal & Bright channels with high & low inputs on each, separate volume controls, as well as shared treble, bass, and presence controls. The traditional tube compliment is 2 5U4G, 2 5881 or 6L6GC, 1 12AX7 and 3 12AY7. I recommend using 5AR4/GZ34 rectifiers myself, and besides NOS tubes I also offer JJ sets of 2 GZ34, 2 6L6GC, 1 12AX7 and 3 12AT7 as current production tubes. I also offer different output transformers to match your particular need from 35 watt to 60 watt on the DoubleDawg.Traditionally the 5E8A came as a 2×12 combo with the speakers mounted diagonally, so the cabinet has a compact size which combined with it’s output wattage made it a very versatile amp. The DoubleDawg is available as a chrome chassis build as well as the traditional tweed combo or head. Different speaker configurations are also available upon request.
